Committal Prayers and Scriptures

We selfishly want to hold on to (Name). It brings great pain to let go. Living in the resurrection hope of our Lord Jesus Christ, in the trust of a loving God and in the promise of eternal life, we now commit his/her body to its place of rest. We will continue to mourn (Name), but his/her laughter will warm the kingdom of God. We will continue to love (Name), but God will now take care of him/her. We will continue to carry (Name) in our thoughts, but he/she will be kept safe in God's hands. Receive him/her in the arms of your mercy, O God, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of all your saints.  As for mortals, their days are like grass; they flourish like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him. -Psalm 103:15-17a For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance. -Ecclesiastes 3:1-2, 4 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." -Revelation 21:3-4

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation, who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God. -2 Corinthians 1:3-4

In sure and certain hope that, as Christ lived and was the first to rise from the dead, we too shall have new life and will join our heavenly Father along with all the saints in a new and better place. We therefore commit our brother/sister (Name) to the earth from which he/she was made, and lay to rest this mortal body that it might put on immortality. The Lord bless him/her and keep him/her; the Lord make his face shine upon him/her and be gracious to him/her; the Lord look upon him/her with favor and give him/her peace.

Believing in the Resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, we now entrust (Name) to the care of Almighty God and we ask Our Father to open the doors to his mansion and lead (Name) to the room made ready just for him/her. As we now commit his/her body to the ground/the deep/the elements/its final resting place; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust, we commend his/her spirit to its new home. Rest eternal grant him/her; and let light perpetual shine upon him/her.

O God, the great Shepherd of all sheep, receive now unto you our beloved brother/sister (Name). As we commit his/her body to the earth/the ground/its final resting-place¨¨ - earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust ¨¨- we commend his/her spirit to your eternal care. Lord, may you bless him/her and keep him/her; may your face shine upon him/her and be gracious to him/her; may you lift up your countenance upon him/her and give him/her peace. Amen.

Almighty God, as you once called our brother/sister (Name) into this life, so now you have called him/her into life everlasting. We therefore commit his/her body to the ground/its final resting-place; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. In the hope of resurrection unto eternal life, through the promise of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we faithfully and victoriously give him/her over to your blessed care. Amen.

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, we commend to God's merciful care our brother/sister (Name); and we commit his/her body to the ground/its final resting place: earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. "Blessed are the dead who ... die in the Lord ... they will rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them."  (Revelation 14:13)

God has blessed and enriched our lives in giving us (Name) to know and love here on earth. Though our time together was not nearly enough, in committing his/her body to the earth, we give over to God the care of his/her spirit, and we acknowledge that we will one day reunite with him/her in God's house where Jesus has prepared a room for us. The Lord bless him/her and keep him/her; the Lord make his face shine upon him/her and be gracious to him/her; the Lord look upon him/her with favor and give him/her peace.

Almighty God, as you once called our brother/sister (Name) into this life, so now you have called him/her into life everlasting. We therefore commit him/her (or his/her remains; his/her body; his/her earthly tent) to the elements. In the hope of resurrection unto eternal life, through the promise of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we faithfully and victoriously give him/her over to your blessed care. Amen.
